Achieve Tahoe Ability Camp

I am very fortunate to have been able to donate my time for four consecutive years now to the Ability Camp at Achieve Tahoe, formerly known as Disabled Sports USA Far West, an amazing non profit out of Alpine Meadows, Lake Tahoe that provides affordable inclusive physical and recreational activities that build health and confidence to the disabled.  I’m especially excited about their recent name change.  They really wanted something that highlight the inclusiveness and the opportunities that they provided and I think it’s a perfect fit.  Every year, the Achieve Tahoe Ability Camp offers a week long program, providing specialized instruction in adaptive alpine skiing and snowboarding for up to 35 disabled veterans and their guests.

Big thanks to Northstar, and Squaw and Alpine Ski Resorts, and Wanderlust Yoga for stepping up again this year and for sponsoring such an amazing program.

TAMBA Spring Kick Off Party Photo Booth

From 2011-2013 I was a board member and secretary for our local Mountain Biking Club, TAMBA.   TAMBA is pretty awesome and it’s full of awesome people who like to ride bikes and make our trails better.  You can head over to their website to read more about them or better yet, join!

Two weeks ago, TAMBA held their spring kick off party and membership drive.  It was a fantastic time at my favorite place (The American Legion, of course) with a slew of my favorite people: local DJs David Berkman donated his time spinning tunes, my buddy Dreu Murin donated his time as MC and I was more than thrilled to donate my Tahoe photo booth.

Here’s a few of my favorites from the evening.  Head on over to the gallery via this link to download your photos, share to social media or order prints.

Here’s to Mountain Biking Season!  Wahoo!

Weddings that Give Back | Published at Black Sheep Bride

I feel pretty lucky to have joined the Black Sheep Bride community.  Danielle’s quest to connect couples with wedding vendors that give back to the community continues to inspire me and enrich my life.

Earlier this year, I was mulling over how I could make the most impact in my quest to give back and decided that the optimal way was to donate a percentage of every wedding booked to the same non-profit for an entire calendar year.  Picking the first non-profit to be the beneficiary for my donations wasn’t even a question.  I’m excited to start a life long tradition of hopefully helping the non-profits that my clients have direct involvement with.  I’m proud to say that I was able to donate $500 to Hope Shines in the first quarter of 2015 and you can read more about Hope Shines, the couple that inspired the cause and the story over at Black Sheep Bride via this link.

Black Sheep Bride aims to “ignite the wedding industry to do more with their goods, inspire brides to seek planning alternatives that save money to save the world, and to impact society with wedding/consumers that embrace good deeds.”  If you are a wedding vendor that believes in the Black Sheep Bride mission and wants to join an amazing community of wedding vendors, you can find out more information and apply via this link.

Fireman's Ball Photo Booth

53rd Annual Firefighter’s Ball Photo Booth

Supporting our local community is important to me and our local firefighter’s definitely deserve our support.  I have quite a few close friends in our local fire department.  The money raised at the annual ball goes to charity,  the district’s scholarships to the fire academy at Lake Tahoe Community College and for equipment they couldn’t otherwise afford.  My favorite way to support our local non-profits is with a donated photo booth and the Firefighter’s Ball is no exception.  It’s especially fun with a fire truck as a back drop!

Thanks to all who came out to support the event.  If you would like to view all the photos from the 53rd Annual Firefighter’s Ball photo booth, you may do so via this link.

Disabled Sports Far West

Disabled Sports Ability Week | Wounded Warriors

I am very fortunate to have been able to donate my time for three consecutive years now to the Wounded Warrior Ability Camp at Disabled Sports USA Far West, an amazing non profit out of Alpine Meadows, Lake Tahoe that provides affordable inclusive physical and recreational activities that build health and confidence to the disabled.  The Ability Camp is a week long program that provides specialized instruction in adaptive alpine skiing and snowboarding for up to 25 soldiers and marines disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This year, Disabled Sport’s USA Far West hosted 18 wounded warriors and their guests at three different Lake Tahoe resorts.  Big thanks to Northstar, and Squaw and Alpine Ski Resorts for sponsoring such an amazing program.

FRESHbash Sacramento

FRESHbash Sacramento | Event Photography

I was recently asked to attend FRESHbash, an exquisitely designed wedding fair and event, on behalf of Black Sheep Bride, a socially conscious wedding network.  FRESHbash, a thoughtfully curated showcase of design exhibitions and experiences meant to raise the creative bar and inspire the senses for the wedding industry.  It took place at the Beatnik Studios in Sacramento, a perfect location for this amazing design-centric event.  I have to add that Beatnik Studios would be the perfect location for a wedding: I’m adding it to my ever growing list of dream places to photograph weddings at!

The event was impeccably decorated by some amazing teams of wedding designers, planners, florists and print-masters.  In addition, it featured experiential stations like a paper calligraphy station, amazing photo booths in cars by The Photo Booth Bug, craft mixology sponsored by Honeybook and Liquidology, fun and innovative food from s+s Gastropub, and unexpected thrills like a human popcorn stand.  You can check out all the amazing design talent that helped contribute to this event over at the  FRESHbash website.

A few of the vendors I was most impressed with included the super rad D’Railed Beauty Trolley, a traveling beauty salon for your wedding day that comes to you!  I also met Ara Arbabzadeh, head of VIP Photography Studios in Davis, CA whose spirit and mutual love of wine I absolutely fell for.  I was also super stoked to finally meet Geoff Bardot, head photographer at The Goodness.  His work is bright, sassy and fun and although we’ve also shared referrals with each other, it was the first time we were able to meet in person!

St. Baldrick's Tahoe

St. Baldrick’s Tahoe | “Brave the Shave”

When local Tahoe teen Bailey Johnson was 9 months old, the doctors said he wouldn’t live another day and definitely not past his first birthday.  He was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that starts in certain types of primitive nerve cells in an embryo or fetus.  Today, Bailey is almost 16 and responsible for spearheading a yearly effort in my community of South Lake Tahoe to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to eradicating childhood cancer.

More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease—in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined.  Childhood cancer isn’t quite so rare in our small town either.  Jenn and Jim Drennan’s beautiful daughter Caitlin was born 4 months premature in 2010.  She was rushed to the hospital in Sacramento where three days later she underwent exploratory abdominal surgery and began chemotherapy.  Like Bailey, Caitlin was also diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma, which, by the time she was born, was already spread throughout her body.

This year, more than 150 participants shaved their head at the St. Baldrick’s Tahoe event to show their support for their fellow community members and to help stamp out childhood cancer.  They raised more than $54,000, besting the previous years’ totals by more than 15 people and $13,000.

I was happy to lend my skills as photographer in the name of Caitlin, whose family I love, cherish and respect.  Here are a few of my favorite images from the night.  If you were a participant or spectator at the event and would like to view or download your images, you may do so via this link.

Giving Back | 2015 Non Profit of the Year | Hope Shines

I recently became a founding member and investor in a small start up called Black Sheep Bride.  I wrote about it yesterday.  Danielle’s enthusiasm and passion for her mission had me thinking about what else I could do to contribute to others and further strengthen my mission and culture of giving back.  I finally settled on a new goal: to donate a portion of every wedding package booked to a non-profit.  I’m going to pick one non-profit a year so that my contributions will hopefully be a significant boost to the organization.   Small amounts add up and I hope that the meager amounts I can contribute make a difference.

The 2015 non-profit of the year is Hope Shines.

Hope Shines Logo

I have chosen Hope Shines as my first non-profit to receive donations because two of my previous wedding clients from 2014, Stephanie and Dan, have considerable roles in the organization.  Dan is the Executive Director of the organization and his new wife Stephanie, is the organization’s Medical Consultant and Volunteer Organizer.  Dan and Stephanie will celebrate their one year anniversary in June.  I think that people that give selflessly are amazing and as such, I want to contribute to the cause that this rad couple finds most important.  Hope Shines, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 2007. Hope Shines provides disadvantaged children in Rwanda both local and foreign mentoring and support through programs focusing on education, nutrition and health. Hope Shines was founded on the belief that every child should be given the opportunity for a healthy, happy life both in mind and body and HOPE for a bright future.

BAHM for Charity Photo Booth | Tahoe Chamber of Commerce

Congrats and big thanks for the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce for their efforts to support our community. Our chamber hosts a monthly Business After Hours Mixer (BAHM) once a month.  Once a year, they have a BAHM for Charity and I honored to donate my photo booth to the cause.   This year’s BAHM for Charity raised $3,650 and food donations for local charities Christmas Cheer and Bread and Broth!

If you were at the event, you may view, download and share your photos from the online gallery.  I’m really sorry to those of you who wrote down your emails on the list.  Unfortunately, I didn’t notice the list get swooped up by cleaning staff and it went m.i.a. while I was cleaning up the booth.  Please share the gallery around to everyone who was there for me!

Here’s a few of my favorites from the evening, but you can see the rest by following this link.

Tahoe Photo Booth | Barton Festival of Trees and Lights

The Tahoe Festival of Trees and Lights is Tahoe’s premier family friendly holiday celebration.  The festival is the Barton Foundation‘s largest fundraiser of the year and occurs over the course of a week every year in December.  It features lavishly decorated holiday trees, wreaths and decor and having visited the fest for the first time last night, I can say that it is truly a holiday wonderland!  In addition, there are different entertainment acts, craft areas, photos with Santa, a Teddy Bear Hospital and opportunities to give back to the community through silent auctions and raffles.  The proceeds from the festival benefit Barton Hospice programs and services and 3,500 attendees drop in over the course of the week.

One night of the festival is dedicated to Barton Healthcare’s holiday party for the family and friends of staff and volunteers and I was more than happy to donate my Tahoe photo booth to the event.  Here are a few of my favorites from the evening.

If you attended the Company Holiday Party and participated in my photo booth, you can view, download and share your photos from the gallery via this link.
