Winter Portraits in Lake Tahoe | Sundell Family

The Sundell Family was hoping for snowy winter portraits in Lake Tahoe for their holiday card photos.  Unfortunately, the week before their scheduled appointment with me, it rained quite a bit and washed most of the snow away.  Not to be deterred, they decided to proceed and oddly enough it ended up snowing during their session!  So although their family portraits weren’t totally white and snow filled, they did get the essence of winter.

Clients ask me all the time what to wear for their family photos and I think this family nailed it!  Neutral palettes are a great way to stand out for family portraits in the forest.  You want to coordinate colors, but not be completely matching.  By choosing two or three colors in a coordinating palette, as they did, you can stand out and allow a mix of textures, accessories and trim stand out!

Family Photos at Lake Tahoe | Hyland Family

Who ever would think that you’d find a ladybug infestation in the sand at a beach in Tahoe?  Not I.  Certainly not these adorable kids.  This awesome family from Northern CA really wanted some family photos at Lake Tahoe to commemorate their vacation together.  The end result were some fantastic family photos and an adventure in millions of ladybugs (and one snakeskin).

This was a veritable gold mine for the candid family photos that I love and while the kids were distracted by tiny polka dots and their parents were pleading with them to look at me, I was silently very happy that they were refusing to accommodate the wishes of the taller folks around them.  If you love candid family photos, make sure you get down and dirty with your kids!  The more you naturally interact and play with them, the better the photos you’ll get.  Photo sessions can be stressful for children and requires a lot of concentration and sometimes a little break for play offers great opportunities for wonderful family memories just like these.

Tahoe Newborn Photography | The Stawickis

Pam and Brent didn’t expect to be blessed with twice the amount of children as they were aiming for.  That’s what they got though!  Twins!  After being born 10 weeks premature, these guys were able to finally come home after a few months in the NICU at Renown in Reno.  The day of the newborn photography session, the boys hadn’t been home for very long and their parents were still trying to figure out how to handle their new roles which was both fantastic and hysterical to experience, as you can imagine.  I knew they were going to succeed with flying colors and they have.  Today, Bryce and Colton are turning into veritable little people with personalities as different as can be.  They are officially five months old, which tells you how far behind I am on sharing awesome photo sessions, and they can almost sit and stand with help.  I’m so excited for the Stawicki family and all that their future with these awesome little sure-to-be football players holds.

Van Sickle State Park Portraits | Baird Family

The Baird family hails from just over yonder from my parents: Fort Worth, TX.  They were in Tahoe celebrating the holidays and wanted to take advantage of all the gorgeous pine trees and snow to get family portraits done.  We headed to a recently formed bi-state park near their hotel in the Heavenly Village for their session and thanks to some gorgeous golden late afternoon light and snow filled mountains, their Van Sickle State Park portraits turned out just perfectly.

Kings Beach Family Portraits | Snider Family

The Snider family, which currently hails from Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri, traveled to Lake Tahoe for a week this summer on a family vacation.  They all frequented Tahoe together while growing up, so Tahoe has held a special place in their hearts.  With growing families and a mother who had been begging for family photos for quite some time, their vacation to Kings Beach seemed like the perfect time and location for a quick Tahoe family portrait session.

Kaitlin was concerned that her kids were going to be a little hard to wrangle due to time changes and vacation land but I had the perfect plan: a portrait session at a beach that offers a playground was the perfect location to allow her kids to take a break in between posing.  My main goal during a portrait session is always to make you feel at home in your photographs, so making sure that young ones can blow off some steam and energy and be able to refocus is always important and these Kings Beach family portraits are no exception!

Family Photos at Lake Tahoe | Bangerter Family

Happy Thanksgiving!  What better thing to blog on a day that celebrates family than a gorgeous family portrait from this fall?

There’s no question in my mind that the Lake Tahoe area offers the best backdrops for family portraits.  There’s a ton of amazing spots to take large groups for family photos at Lake Tahoe and for the Bangerter Family, Fallen Leaf Lake was the perfect spot.  They wanted somewhere that they could walk and hike in a bit, to really enjoy the full outdoor experience.  With a large family and some gorgeous fall golden light, I’d call this Tahoe family portrait session a success!

Tahoe Senior Session | Allison

Golden hour is famed for it’s warmth and possibility, named so for the warm amber hue that happens when the sun is diffused in just the right way, before sunset.  Sometimes, it seems extra magical and things just fall into place exactly the right way.  Allison was on vacation with her family from Fort Worth, TX and really wanted to take advantage of being in a far away locale for her senior portraits so that she didn’t have the same images and locations that all of her friends had.  Her family booked me for two hours so we had a ton of time to romp through both the woods and the beach to give Allison all the varied backdrops she was seeking.  I took a gamble and had my good friend Jenay at Lake Tahoe Yoga show off a new meadow to me that I didn’t know existed.  The hunt paid off and Jenay hit the nail on the head with her location scouting: those woods were magical.  So magical that even she didn’t believe it was the spot we’d been in that afternoon when she was showing it off to me.  I’m so happy that Allison and her rad Texas family connected with me.  I had a blast showing off my home, romping through weeds and splashin in Lake Tahoe with them!  Congrats Allison on your senior year!

Tahoe Newborn Photography | Jodi + Alex + Isabella

I’m so thrilled and honored that I could capture the newest addition for this rad family.  My version of Tahoe newborn photography is as relaxed, informal and as fussy or unfussy as your little one is.  You have to be flexible to capture all the details, from the toes, to the hands to the parents’ interactions with their new infant.  Jodi and Alex’s home session is as intimate, gorgeous and moving as I would ever hope a session could be.  I know they are going to make wonderful parents and I can’t wait to watch Isabella grow into a young lady.
