what to wear in your family portrait

Tahoe Family Photos | LTCC Demonstration Garden | Poth Family

Last fall, shortly before their second daughter was set to be born, my friends the Poth family hired me to celebrate their growing family with some Tahoe family photos.  We met early in the morning at the LTCC Demonstration Garden, when their spitfire of a child Zada would feel extra sparky and accommodating.

Since then, their family has grown to include their new daughter Ayah, but not without quite the journey.  Baby Ayah was born premature, blind, and with holes in her heart.  She is a little fighter and this family has been air-evaced back and forth across the Western US for more surgeries, hospital stays and emergencies than any one family should endure.  They are doing well and trying to be as normal as a family can be under the circumstances they are in.

If you are interested, you can donate to Ayah’s Go Fund Me.  In addition, the Poth family urges you to donate blood.  Donated blood is one of the only reasons Ayah is still here today.  Get information on donating blood in your area here.  If you are a Lake Tahoe resident, there is a blood drive in our area on May 23rd and you can register to donate here.

If you are not a member of a medical flight network, especially if you participate in any sort of sport, then both myself and the Poth family urge you to join one.  Our local networks for the Reno Tahoe area is AirMedCare.

The Poth family also requests that you contribute to medical and scientific research.  It saves lives.

Winter Portraits in Lake Tahoe | Sundell Family

The Sundell Family was hoping for snowy winter portraits in Lake Tahoe for their holiday card photos.  Unfortunately, the week before their scheduled appointment with me, it rained quite a bit and washed most of the snow away.  Not to be deterred, they decided to proceed and oddly enough it ended up snowing during their session!  So although their family portraits weren’t totally white and snow filled, they did get the essence of winter.

Clients ask me all the time what to wear for their family photos and I think this family nailed it!  Neutral palettes are a great way to stand out for family portraits in the forest.  You want to coordinate colors, but not be completely matching.  By choosing two or three colors in a coordinating palette, as they did, you can stand out and allow a mix of textures, accessories and trim stand out!

Tahoe Family Portraits | Galvez Family

I have a ridiculous number of gorgeous golden Tahoe family sessions to share from this summer.  These giggling kids and their incredibly wonderful parents were a blast to tromp around in the woods with!  We held their sessions at one of my favorite family portrait locations, Valhalla Estate.  It’s a favorite of mine simply because it offers a little bit of everything – the lake, which everyone wants, and forest and meadow, which is what I want for that golden backlit dreamy light.

Van Sickle State Park Portraits | Baird Family

The Baird family hails from just over yonder from my parents: Fort Worth, TX.  They were in Tahoe celebrating the holidays and wanted to take advantage of all the gorgeous pine trees and snow to get family portraits done.  We headed to a recently formed bi-state park near their hotel in the Heavenly Village for their session and thanks to some gorgeous golden late afternoon light and snow filled mountains, their Van Sickle State Park portraits turned out just perfectly.

Tahoe Maternity Photographer | The Stawickis

The Stawickis recently had twice the fun arrive in their house.  Yes!  Twins!  In a crazy turn of events, the young little future football players were born the week after this maternity session, just shy of 10 weeks early.  After spending a long time in the NICU at Renown Medical in Reno, the boys are home with their new parents and I do have some awesome newborn photos to share next week as well.  In the meantime, here’s a few of my favorites from the Stawicki family’s portrait session.  Pam and Brent, thanks so much for hiring me to be your Tahoe maternity photographer!  I’m so glad I had the opportunity to capture your pregnancy!

Tahoe Family Photos in the Snow | Reger Family

The week between Christmas and New Years was a doozy!  There were a ton of families in town visiting the lake for their holidays and they all wanted Tahoe family photos in the snow!  Thankfully, we had a fresh blanket of snow on the ground and some fairly cold temps that week.  I’m especially thankful for the Reger family, who had adventurous spirits and an equal amount of enthusiasm.  I think their session at Sand Harbor State Park turned out absolutely amazing thanks to some fantastic light and an all family snowball fight.  Here’s a few of my favorites from their day.

Tahoe Family Photos in the Snow | The Callahans

Why is it that nothing says holidays more than a snow covered forest?  I suppose we can all blame Irving Berlin for that.  Thankfully, Tahoe is a veritable winter wonderland compared to the past few years and when this adorable family contacted me hoping for some Tahoe family photos in the snow, I was able to promise that it would be absolutely no problem!  We sat out to one of my favorite Tahoe portrait locations, Valhalla Historic Estate, for an early morning portrait session.

Brenna has a friend who runs a rental business for weddings and has a warehouse chock full of rustic, vintage and otherwise perfect props for a winter portrait session and they were able to snag an adorable sled for their 16 month old son to play on while we photographed them.  He was often more interested in eating the snow than playing in it, as toddlers are apt to do.

Despite missing a nap, some cold early morning temps, and wet snow-filled fingers, we were able to get some smiling faces and some awesome photos for this family’s holiday card.  Mom and Dad told me that they were pretty serious and that their son was pretty wacky so they had an idea for a photo and they were wondering if I could make it happen.  I find the end result to be absolutely endearing and hysterical.  I’m sure you know which one I’m talking about!

Kings Beach Family Portraits

Kings Beach Family Portraits | Snider Family

The Snider family, which currently hails from Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri, traveled to Lake Tahoe for a week this summer on a family vacation.  They all frequented Tahoe together while growing up, so Tahoe has held a special place in their hearts.  With growing families and a mother who had been begging for family photos for quite some time, their vacation to Kings Beach seemed like the perfect time and location for a quick Tahoe family portrait session.

Kaitlin was concerned that her kids were going to be a little hard to wrangle due to time changes and vacation land but I had the perfect plan: a portrait session at a beach that offers a playground was the perfect location to allow her kids to take a break in between posing.  My main goal during a portrait session is always to make you feel at home in your photographs, so making sure that young ones can blow off some steam and energy and be able to refocus is always important and these Kings Beach family portraits are no exception!

Family Portraits at Lake Tahoe

Family Photos at Lake Tahoe | Bangerter Family

Happy Thanksgiving!  What better thing to blog on a day that celebrates family than a gorgeous family portrait from this fall?

There’s no question in my mind that the Lake Tahoe area offers the best backdrops for family portraits.  There’s a ton of amazing spots to take large groups for family photos at Lake Tahoe and for the Bangerter Family, Fallen Leaf Lake was the perfect spot.  They wanted somewhere that they could walk and hike in a bit, to really enjoy the full outdoor experience.  With a large family and some gorgeous fall golden light, I’d call this Tahoe family portrait session a success!

Family Portraits in Tahoe | Atalig Family | Sneak Peek

Zephyr Cove Resort continues to be one of my favorite places to photograph family portraits in Tahoe.  The endless options on it’s giant boulders on the beach offer great shade when you need it, new perspectives to keep your creativity fresh, and killer sunsets.  The Atalig family was visiting from the Bay Area and really wanted a wonderful memento of their family vacation and a Tahoe sunset portrait session seemed like the perfect souvenier!
