Graduation season is here!  We’re all anxiously hoping for the days when the sun begins to poke its head out again and we have the kind of warmth that lures you out to the city parks.  In addition to the sun creeping out, the retail store shelves have suddenly become lined with stuffed animals bearing a cap and gown and space for signatures and Oh the Places You’ll Go books out front. True story – I am 44 years old and I still have all THREE copies that were given to me when I graduated. I am actually not sure why.

Not only does this time of year signal the beginning of spring, it’s also a signal that many people are completing an educational milestone. Its graduation season.  Though people graduate throughout the year, May and June tend to be the biggest months for celebrating these accomplishments, with one of the biggest being high school graduations.

High school graduations have come with their own traditions since just about forever – some may seem ancient and over the top, but a few are worth continuing: one of which is senior pictures. Having senior pictures taken is a good idea for several reasons and most of them are extremely unselfish or vain.  If you’re thinking about skipping senior portraits, here are five compelling reasons why you shouldn’t—and how they offer more than just a beautiful photo.

Reason #1: For Your Family

Your family and close friends have been there every step of the way, offering love, guidance, and support, and maybe unwelcome words of wisdom, as you’ve navigated the journey to graduation. Senior portraits are a beautiful way to give them a tangible reminder of the person they’ve helped shape. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even extended family like second cousins have watched you grow from a child into a young adult, and having a professional photo to mark this moment is incredibly meaningful. These portraits allow your loved ones to celebrate not just your accomplishments, but the unique role they’ve played in your growth. Whether it’s a comparison to photos from your early years or a fresh image that captures the now, senior photos are a cherished keepsake for everyone who’s been part of your journey.

Reason #2: For Practical Reasons (Including Your Graduation Invitations)

Graduation is one of life’s most significant milestones, and capturing this moment with senior portraits is a thoughtful and practical way to share your achievement. When sending out invitations to your graduation ceremony, consider including a professional photo of yourself. Many of your guests may not have seen you in a while, and a photo helps them put a name to the face of the now-grown-up graduate they’ll be celebrating. If you forget to include a photo with the invites, no worries—these images make for perfect additions to your thank-you notes after the ceremony, allowing you to continue sharing your accomplishments long after the event.

Reason #3: To Share and Exchange with Friends (And Remember the Good Times)

The reality is, high school friendships can take you in different directions after graduation. Some friends may move away, pursue different careers, or even end up in different corners of the world. That’s why exchanging senior photos is such a meaningful gesture. These photos serve as lasting mementos that can be shared with friends as you all go your separate ways. Imagine years from now, when you’re reminiscing about your high school days, having a tangible memory of those friendships—whether it’s a shared laugh over that unforgettable physics class or a reminder of all the time spent together. Senior photos help you preserve these connections and memories for years to come.

Reason #4: To Capture Who You Are at This Moment

High school is a defining time in your life, and it’s more than just about academics—it’s about discovering your passions, forging friendships, and growing into the person you are meant to be. Whether you’re an athlete who lives for the game, a musician who spends late nights perfecting your craft, or a club member who’s had unforgettable experiences, senior photos are the perfect way to document the essence of who you are right now. Incorporating props, locations, or themes that represent your interests and passions will make your portraits uniquely yours. If basketball was your thing, imagine having a session on the court where you’ve spent countless hours perfecting your shots. Or perhaps you’re a proud member of the debate team—show your intellectual side with a setting that highlights your involvement. Senior photos are your chance to create an image that truly captures who you are in this moment.
