Tahoe Family Portrait Photographer

Tahoe Family Portrait Photographer

Looking for a Tahoe Family Portrait Photographer who can capture both the polished family photo for your holiday card and the natural, unscripted moments that happen when your family is simply being themselves? I’m Lauren Lindley, and I specialize in relaxed family sessions that don’t feel stiff or forced. I’ve worked with families of all shapes and sizes here in Lake Tahoe, and I know how to bring out real smiles, keep things moving, and adapt when the unexpected happens, especially when there are toddler tantrums, because let’s be honest, kids, dogs, and weather all have their own ideas. In short, I am a fun, energetic, and deeply local Tahoe family portrait photographer. I’ve lived and worked in Tahoe for over a decade now which still kind of floors me (but I do sneak away and travel an AWFUL lot).  I know where the light is best, which locations photograph well, how to adjust when plans need to shift, and how to make even the most camera-shy family member relax.  Whether you’re looking for a session that’s calm and classic or full of movement and laughter, I’ll help you walk away with images that feel true to your family and the season of life you’re in.

Tahoe family portraits are great for anyone that’s visiting for a family vacation, gathering multiple generations for a reunion, or just overdue for updated portrait.  Regardless of the situation, my job is to help you create images that feel honest and connected. Your session will be relaxed, collaborative, and tailored to fit your family’s personality. Reach out today to hire me as your Tahoe Family Portrait Photographer.

What to Expect from Your Tahoe Family Portrait Session

When you work with me, you’re getting more than just someone with a camera. You’re getting a photographer who knows how to read a room (or a beach, or a forest trail), spot good light fast, pivot when needed, and keep things light even if the toddler’s refusing to put on shoes. I specialize in moving quickly between the standard posed photos that everyone wants for their wall to a relaxed, fun, sometimes silly, candid style.  In short, in your Tahoe family portrait session you’re going to get both version: the classic family images you’ll want for frames and holiday cards along with some surprises and candid images that feel representative of your family and their personalities (or whatever mood they showed up with that day). The plan is almost always the same: I like to move around, make the use of the variety of backdrops we have at most of my favorite locations, we’ll take breaks when needed, and we’ll keep things simple and most importantly, really fun. You won’t have to worry about awkward posing. I’ll guide you when it helps and back off when it doesn’t. Some families want more direction, others prefer to just hang out and let things unfold. Either way, I adjust to match your vibe.

Every Tahoe family portrait session includes a full set of edited, high-resolution images that you can download and print anywhere. You’ll also get web-sized versions that are easy to share online. Everything is delivered in a private online gallery that makes it easy to view, share, and order professional prints if you want them. No watermarks, no upcharges, no weird hoops to jump through. Just a straightforward process that gives you images you’ll actually use, share, laugh at, and will be the foundation for the memories of your time here in Lake Tahoe.

More Ways to Capture Your Time in Tahoe

If you’re the kind of family that wants more than just a traditional portrait session for their Tahoe family portrait, I offer a few additional options that let you document more of your time in Tahoe without having to worry about getting your phone out every five minutes.

For families planning a full day of activities, I offer vacation photography sessions. This can look like breakfast at the cabin, paddleboarding or swimming at the lake, an afternoon hike, or just hanging out and being together. It’s casual, it’s real, and it captures the stuff that usually never makes it into a frame: messy hair, sandy feet, inside jokes, and all the little connections that happen when no one’s trying too hard. I’m there as a fly on the wall with just enough direction to make sure you come away with something beautiful and meaningful.

If you’re visiting during ski season, I also offer on-mountain Tahoe ski photography. I’ll meet you at the resort and spend time riding and photographing your family while you ski or snowboard together. You’ll get a mix of scenic portraits, action shots, and candid chairlift moments. I shoot at Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood, and I’m open to other Tahoe-area resorts if you have a spot in mind but please note that a same day lift ticket will be required in addition to the session fee.

If either of these feels like a better fit for how your family rolls, let me know when you reach out. I’ll send details and help you figure out what kind of session makes the most sense.

Preparing for Your Tahoe Family Portrait Session

Most families don’t get portraits done all the time, so if you’re not sure what to expect or how to prep, you’re not alone. I’ve put together a handful of simple, no-stress guides to help you feel ready.  I’m here to make suggestions on great locations for your Tahoe family portrait, whether they be forest, beach, meadow, epic views, or all of the above.

You’ll get tips on what to wear so everyone looks good together without feeling overly coordinated or over-styled. No need for matching outfits unless you’re really into that. I’ll walk you through how to pick colors that photograph well in Tahoe’s environment, especially with the landscape changing from season to season.

If you’re doing a session with little kids, I’ve got advice for that too. Think snacks (maybe less sugar, y’all), breaks, a few games of red light, green light, and low expectations around attention spans. I’ve photographed enough toddlers to know that cooperative isn’t always on the menu, and that’s totally fine. We’ll adjust, move around, and keep it playful. If everyone’s comfortable, the photos will reflect that.

Winter sessions need a little extra planning. I’ll give you the details on how to stay warm without looking bundled beyond recognition. Layers are your friend, and it helps to know when to swap boots for real shoes once we get to the spot.

If you’ve got a big group or a multi-generational family, I’ll send a few suggestions for how to organize things ahead of time so we’re not figuring it out at the last minute. The more we prep, the smoother it all goes.

Your job is to show up. I’ll handle the rest.

Do you love skiing? Do you have a winter birthday? If so, throwing a retro ski birthday party like my clients Kirsten and Micah did last month maybe the perfect way to celebrate. Whether you are an avid skier, a beginner, love costume parties, or simply enjoy the nostalgic charm of retro ski culture and a good reason to order a bottle or 9 of champagne and fondue, there are plenty of reasons that not only should you throw a retro ski party, but you should hire a professional Tahoe ski photographer to capture it. More from Kirsten's Retro 50th Ski Birthday Party and why you should consider professional photos of you and your friends or family skiing here!

Why you should hire a birth photographer

Labor and delivery can be hectic but also overwhelmingly beautiful, and often, forgettable. It can be hard to give someone the responsibility of capturing the moment when they actually have to be present in it and that's why considering having a professional photographer on site shouldn't be considered egregious. Here are a few reasons why you should hire a birth photographer.

So you think you want candid photos?

By |February 22nd, 2021|Categories: Family Portrait, Tips|Tags: , |

If you or your clients have requested “candid” photos, this one’s for you. When we think of candid photos, we think of the perfectly relaxed, comfortable, effortlessly beautiful people laughing or looking at each other, as if they never knew the camera was there. And it’s cute to think these photos are actually candid, but they’re not (sorry to burst your bubble). When clients request those staple “candids,” it’s more than just showing up and randomly catching the perfect frame–there’s a lot that goes into the perfect “candid”: lighting, posing, and more.  It's my job to make you look effortless and at ease and that takes just a little bit of work.

You don’t have to be the Leslie Knope of gift giving to nail it this holiday season. Photo prints are arguably the easiest and most affordable gifts to give, especially for the people who have it all. Gifting prints for the holidays should ease your stress and I'm here to make it extra easy on you and tell you how to choose the best photos to gift and some of my favorite places to buy them.
