I first photographed Justin and Ashlyn at Sand Harbor for their proposal. Their energy is so warm and loving and it was incredibly clear to me from the very beginning how much they value connection and presence. Add in a dash of playful humor and they were so easy to work with and so incredibly fun to be around and have in front of my camera for an hour. When they reached out about their wedding at Valhalla Estate in South Lake Tahoe, I knew their day would reflect the same energy.
Valhalla Estate is one of my favorite places to photograph because it offers a wide range of backdrops and light throughout the day. There are deeply forested paths to explore, the grand lawn, a massive meadow with Tallac in the distance, and obviously the proximity to the lake make it incredibly versatile and rich in variety.
Their wedding was a blast from start to finish thanks to their incredibly well dressed group of friends. Other standouts included an absolutely stunning outdoor dinner on the lawn and a dance party fueled by Justin’s family that absolutely took over the night. What stood out most, though, was how personal their choices felt. Their timeline decisions supported the goal of spending real time with the people they love, and that intention shaped the day in the best possible way.

Valhalla Weddings: Rethinking the Wedding Party
Justin and Ashlyn chose not to have a traditional wedding party. Even without a wedding party though, they still had a massive crew of awesome people around them for most of the day. They invited their closest friends to spend the pre-ceremony time with them, to be part of the afternoon in a relaxed and meaningful way, and to join in for portraits as a unified group. These friends brought a steady, joyful energy to our afternoon. Ashlyn called her friends “the blue crew” and they arrived in coordinated shades of blue. They were as helpful as a wedding party would be: carrying wedding dress trains, taking video for them, and curling stray fallen hairs.
This approach created a comfortable environment for everyone involved. Their friends and siblings were able to be present without the pressure of titles or responsibilities, and the atmosphere felt much more like a group of people enjoying time together rather than a structured wedding party lineup. The coordinated wardrobe choices added visual harmony to the portraits. Relaxed timing allowed us to move through the photo session without rushing and have fun with everyone present.
The Blue Crew brought genuine connection, steady support, and an easy sense of fun to the day and I found their inclusion to the first half of our day to be a thoughtful choice that aligned with Justin and Ashlyn’s priorities. This kind of structure works well for couples who want connection without added formality. It sets the tone for a wedding day that celebrates relationships over pomp and circumstance. This is the kind of energy I love in a wedding day.

Valhalla Weddings: Why This Is My Favorite Spot in Tahoe
Valhalla Estate is hands-down my favorite place in Lake Tahoe for portraits. The variety on the property is unmatched, and no matter what time of day we’re shooting, there’s always a great option for light, textures, and backdrops.
We started our portraits near the Grand Hall on what I call the Great Lawn, where the tall trees and filtered sun created soft, even light that worked beautifully for group photos. From there, for Ashlyn and Justin’s couples portraits we moved down one of the forested trails in to the bright sunlight and open forest, which gave us some fun options for high contrast images. At sunset, we made our way out to the dock and the beach for those epic absolutely necessary Tahoe shots with the mountains in the background.
Valhalla offers something really rare in this area: versatility without complication. Even in the dead of winter and when there is a ton of snow, Valhalla offers incredible variety. On a wedding day, it means that you can do everything you need within a short walk at almost any time of day. It’s a location that really supports the flow of the day without ever interrupting, which is something I value deeply when building a wedding day timeline with my couples. I have said it before and I’ll say it again: I want your wedding day to be a day where you spend time with the people you love most, and not a portrait session where you happen to get married. I will always do everything in my power to make sure that’s the flow of your day, but Valhalla Tahoe weddings make that priority incredibly easy.

Dinner on the Lawn: New to Valhalla Weddings
One of the most impactful changes I’ve seen in Valhalla weddings in the last few years is the ability to host dinner and toasts on the great lawn. Pre-pandemic, ceremonies AND receptions were strictly indoors, which made logistics more rigid and limited the guest experience. Cocktail hours were generally held outdoors to allow the staff to flip the room from ceremony chairs to dinner tables inside. Then, post dinner, you would have to flip the room AGAIN into a dance floor. Changes in the lease agreement with the forest service during the pandemic has now opened up so much possibility for couples who want a more open, spacious feel to their evening. Today, you can hold your ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner on the lawn and honestly it’s a stunning welcome change to Valhalla weddings. The entire point of getting married in Tahoe is to be outside in the great expanse of it’s beauty.
Justin and Ashlyn’s Valhalla wedding dinner setup took full advantage of this. There was “living room” of seating for folks to enjoy on the lawn during cocktail hour, lawn games on the edge of the space, and then the lawn itself offers enough of an expanse for large tables to be seated with plenty of breathing room for movement and so that no one feels claustrophobic or squished. Add that golden backlight breaking through the pine trees and you’ve got a magical evening on your hands.
Being able to dine and toast in the forest adds an entirely different dimension to Valhalla weddings. It is one of my favorite changes to how Lake Tahoe Weddings utilize the property, and Justin and Ashlyn’s celebration was a perfect example of how well it can work.

A Dance Floor That Brought the House Down
By the time dinner wrapped and we moved into the dance portion of the night, the vibe had already shifted into something bigger than a typical reception. I am not sure what exactly I expected from this group, but the energy they brought to that dance floor was next level.
This was not the kind of slow-building reception where people trickle onto the floor after a few drinks. This Valhalla wedding dance floor popped OFF. There was dancing, cheering, and moments of full-blown celebration with coordinated dances, huge dance circles, bright flashing accompaniments, and contagious energy. One of my favorite parts of the reception was how multigenerational it felt. This was not just a young crowd partying – everyone took part and they danced HARD.

There is no perfect formula for a good wedding day, but I think that what consistently makes the biggest difference is intention. Justin and Ashlyn made choices that prioritized their people, their comfort, and the kind of energy they wanted to carry from start to finish. They wanted their day to be relaxed and they wanted to spend quality time with the ones they love. Their day was structured to create space for connection, not control the flow of it, and because of that, everything else fell into place.
They created a timeline that allowed for breathing room and they chose a venue that supported their priorities. Every part of the day felt like a reflection of their personalities and their values, not a list of traditions they felt obligated to follow, which we all know is something I value in my couples. I think that authenticity came through in the images and in the way the day felt for everyone who was there.
Weddings like this are a reminder that beautiful images are a byproduct of a meaningful experience. If you’re planning a wedding at Valhalla Estate, or anywhere around Lake Tahoe, and you want photography that captures connection, momentum, and everything in between, I’d love to be part of it. I work with couples who care more about presence than perfection and I love to be part of timelines that protect your space to be with your people. Let’s plan a perfect wedding day, whether it’s a Valhalla wedding or at another venue, that allows you to stay grounded in what matters most to you, while still getting a gallery that reflects the full story, energy, and people that you invited to be part of your day.
