As much as boudoir photos are an intimate gift for your partner, they’re just as much for you. In case you need a reason to strip down and feel sexy, here are three reasons why it’s time to book your boudoir session:

  1. Marking a milestone. Anniversary, divorce, birthday, holidays. So many milestones happen in a year that we let fly by. Pause to take it in with a gift to yourself (or someone special). Make it a happy birthday present to yourself or a jumpstart to getting back out there after a bad breakup. I booked my first boudoir session just before my 40th birthday because I wanted to celebrate how many awesome things my body has done in the first half of my life.
  2. Boosting your confidence. Ever hear of “fake it ‘til ya make it”? Even if you don’t feel sexy, getting yourself dolled up and in front of a camera will get you there. Maybe, like most of us, you’ve been working really hard on your mental and physical health lately—a boudoir session is the perfect way to celebrate some self-care.
  3. Just because. Boudoir sessions are ultimately a day to play dress up, get pampered from head to toe, and to feel your best. It’s important to pause and embrace the beauty of your body in all seasons of your life. If you’re thinking “Should I do it?” the answer is yes, you absolutely should.

Prepping for your session

Keep these things in mind as you prepare for your boudoir session:

  • If you’re getting your hair and makeup done, arrive well rested and hydrated. Check in with your stylist and makeup artist to see if you should come with clean hair and how they’d like you to prime your skin.
  • Ditch your bra. Especially the day of the session, but why not the day before (or always, really). Even the comfiest sports bras create lines that are difficult to edit out.
  • Pack a boudoir bag with deodorant, a change of clothes, your drink of choice (water, and I also encourage liquor, but I also provide it so…), and at least one item of clothing of your partner’s, like a button-down.
  • Don’t go taste-testing something new the night before your session. There’s nothing less sexy than feeling sick to your stomach. Stick with what you know.
  • If you plan on getting waxed, go at least a week before your session in case of redness and inflammation.
  • Get a haircut at least two weeks in advance of your session—one, in case you need to fix it, and two, for a more lived-in look.
  • Skip the spray tan. Spray tans always look orange against white linens, but if you must, make sure you get it done no sooner than three days before your session. Shower at least once after getting your tan, too, so you don’t stain the linens.
