Tricia and Tracy only hired me for a few hours for their Dayton backyard wedding, but those few hours were nothing short of hilarious spectacular joy. There may have been oppressively relentless 102 degree heat in the desert, wild fire smoke caking the mountain views, and crying uncomfortable children (#lifeishard), but the rest of us had the greatest time ever. Small intimate elopements and micro weddings have always been popular in Lake Tahoe, and now so more than ever. I believe that everyone, no matter what their budget or the size of their event, deserves amazing photography. Often, intimate weddings hire me for only an hour and that was the case with Gage and Nathan's Lakeside Beach LGBTQ elopement. More from their intimate day here!
Happy Pride Month! When you get to planning and wedding spending—whether it’s during Pride Month or year round—be sure to support LGBTQ+-owned businesses, like these ones. You may be surprised to see many cult favorites on this list.
It was an intimate day that was almost completely DIY. Beth and Sally bucked tradition and did many things that I find standard in LGBT+ weddings, like getting ready together and processing together down the aisle. It was representative of both of them and their time together - they designed their own gifts, artwork, invites and florals. LGBT+ weddings are like heteronormative weddings in many ways--except there’s one major standout: the individuality is fierce and unapologetic. Photographing LGBT+ weddings is like coming up for fresh air. Couples tend to customize nearly all parts of their day, skirting the traditional route. Since I started photographing weddings, LGBT+ wedding trends have changed quite a bit. Yet some trends have stood the test of time. Some of my favorites are up on the blog!
I LOVE backyard weddings. I love the simplicity. I love the camaraderie. I love the uniqueness. I love that people make it their own. I love that there are usually long tables with family style dining and open seating plans. I love dancing under twinkle lights and stars. I love the lawn games and less formal attire and summery cocktails. I also love Pride month so what better way to celebrate it than with a month of LGBT+ wedding posts and related resources!
