Year Two at Gator by the Bay as a San Diego Concert Photographer
Omega Events brought me back to Spanish Landing Park in May for the twenty-third Gator by the Bay, which made it the first San Diego festival I have photographed already knowing the site. The festival ran seven stages, more than a hundred performances, and ten thousand pounds of Louisiana crawfish across four days on the harbor. This post is about what the second year actually changes, from knowing the real distance between stages to knowing where the second line forms and which direction it moves. It is also about why repeat clients get a better gallery than first-year clients do, whether the job is a festival on the harbor or a single show in a venue.
Liberty Station Event Venue Spotlight: Ingram Plaza
This past June I photographed Heritage Fire San Diego at Ingram Plaza, the central lawn of the old Naval Training Center in Point Loma, now the district called Liberty Station. It is 100,000 square feet of open ground ringed by restored 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, which is a rare thing for an outdoor venue at this scale. This post covers what the site gives you as an event venue, how I work a four-hour walk-around tasting in blocks of intention, and the practical considerations worth weighing before you book it. There is also a fair amount about chefs cooking really delicious meat over live fire, because that was the afternoon. Oh, and wine, which we all know that I love.
